Gig Information

Please join us at the Audio Foundation for the joint opening of Karin Hofko 'Body Remix' and Fraser Austin 'TOTALLY THERE - hit refresh 'til satisfied' at Audio Foundation HQ, Thursday 5 July 2012, 6pm start.

Details below:

Karin Hofko 'Body Remix'

“Music is the soundtrack of our lives.” Dick Clark ( American radio and TV personality, 1929-2012)

With the proliferation of portable media players and the ease of handling mp3 songs, radio and podcasts, the individuals listening pleasure in public spaces has flourished.

Edison Research led a survey early this year to study emerging digital platforms and their impact on the media landscape in the US. 61% of the population own a portable digital media device and 25% of which listen to music, radio and podcasts several times per day or more.

The consumption of sound through headphones includes the listener and excludes their surroundings from the sonic impact, making it both a personal experience and an acoustically fair activity for others.

While sonic space is divided and reallocated by the use of headphones, the listener and their surroundings continue to share the same physical space; their interrelationship is not abolished but merely shifted.

Body Remix is a series of experiments that explore aspects of music interpretation and the interdependence of a sound consumer and his environment.

The setup consists of a test person listening to an engaging music track through headphones. Audio- visual incidents during the consumption are being documented for future evaluation.

These experiments deconstruct the body and its function as a processor, amplifier or purifier of our perceived reality and highlight the discrepancy of a method that simultaneously encrypts media into an incomprehensible personal code, and deciphers and extracts new meaning from it.

Fraser Austin 'TOTALLY THERE - hit refresh 'til satisfied'

Fraser Austin b. 1983

Fraser Austin left high school and got a diploma in Interactive CD-ROM Authoring at the beginning of the new millennium. Spending the next few years lamenting the death of the CD-ROM by playing in bands and doing everything contrary to avoid becoming a trad graphic designer for a living. Somewhere along the way he formed the co-operative record label Crystal Magic to house his own musical projects and that of his pals. Doing GFX out of necessity, posters and cd sleeves. Eventually his multimedia training caught up with him and as the internet became more dynamic and content rich so did his own experiments with video/animation and digital graphics. As he would finish recording songs he'd also make quick (within the same afternoon) music videos, utilising domestic quality digital cameras and mostly webcam/screen captures. Fraser Austin currently lives in Sydney, Australia, but is more often found online.

TOTALLY THERE - hit refresh 'til satisfied is an explosion of the practicing narcissist in an online and virtual environment. Using entry level 3D animation software/computer games and webcam stills. Fraser is emulating/simulating himself as a self-referencing creative-feedback-loop. Exploring his own songbook of successions of coffee and computer use. Creating a closed network. A hyper real vision of himself staring out rather than looking IN.

Fraser Austin performs and records under the name Secrets and Feelings, and was a member of the electronic duo Frase and Bri.

TOTALLY THERE - hit refresh 'til satisfied' will feature accompanying text by Tim Gentles. Tim Gentles is an Auckland-based music and art writer, who is interested in the intersection and evolution of musical and art practices. He blogs for Rose Quartz and has written for Ad Hoc, Altered Zones, foxy digitalis, and The Corner, as well as having written a few accompanying texts for artists. As a music blogger, Tim has a particular interest in the way the internet has transformed musical and visual forms, giving rise to a post-critical online culture that increasingly blurs the distinction between the real and the virtual. Tim Gentles will be DJing at the exhibition opening.
