NOTE: CANCELLED
Nashvilles favourite sons, band of brothers JEFF The Brotherhood return to NZ on the back of their critically acclaimed, Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) produced, major label debut album Hypnotic Nights.
Bruvvers Jake and Jamin Orrall have already amassed an impressive eight album back-catalogue, including a live album on Jack Whites prestigious Third Man Records, while still barely in their mid 20s. Not content with making the rest of us look like candy-ass slackers, their punishing touring schedule would make even the Hamburg-era Beatles blanch. Not bad for just three strings and drums.
New album Hypnotic Nights finds the band still mining the rich seam of hook heavy sludge-pop they have cornered the market on, but this time the emphasis is on the pop, with a side of sludge and psyche. Producer Auerbach has exposed the big dumb rock anthem side of the boys without sacrificing the all-important garage rock element and yes, thats right, there is a sitar involved too.
Hypnotic Nights celebrates the endless summer of six packs, beach parties, BBQs and teenage depression (!) and chucks in a cover of Black Sabbaths mighty Changes just for the hell of it. Pitchfork likened it to a Krautrock influenced Weezer circa the Blue album, and other comparisons to those other bruvvers of few chords - The Ramones - abound. But the JEFFs are very much their own men - check out their tour blog where they expound upon their twin obsessions of cats and White People With Dreadlocks, amongst other things.
