The first Saturday in September we're bringing in the truly beautiful sounds of ESTHER STEPHENS playing with her band & the joyous foot stomping roar of MICHAEL KRISHNAN JONES.
Add CALLUM GENTLEMAN at the start & you've got a glorious eclectic gig.
For our Wine Cellar gig, Esther will be playing with a stand-out band;
CHIP MATTHEWS on Bass, TOM BROOME on Drums, ABRAHAM KUNIN on guitars.
ESTHER STEPHENS
Esther is an Auckland-born artist now based in Melbourne, with a love for complex harmonies & alternative pop song-writing structure. With her New York produced, NZ On Air funded debut single 'Under You' out September 13th, we're damn lucky to have her back home in Auckland and playing this wee gig.
Esther’s music is a powerful blend of old soul & contemporary pop, citing classic influences like Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin & Etta James, with modern acts such as Bjork & Lauryn Hill. Esther is also a master collaborator, lending her vocal prowess to acts including Homebrew, Sola Rosa, Isaac Aesili (Funkomunity) & Tama Waipara.
MICHAEL KRISHNAN JONES
A powerful performer with a big, rich voice, Welshman Michael Krishnan Jones now calls New Zealand home. He came here wanting to make a career in music and is doing just that. Michael cut his teeth in the local bar scene and can be heard playing all over Auckland most nights of the week, sometimes twice a night. When not performing solo, he is part of Pat for President with Patrick Shanahan (who is also half of electronic-pop duo Ophelia). Michael is so busy playing live (even as I write this), he has no time to put his music on-line.
CALLUM GENTLEMAN
Trouper, Raconteur, Impresario, Chancer. In many ways the gentleman is at other end of the spectrum from the divine Esther Stephens. Essentially Callum writes stories. Those stories usually come out as songs. Songs about good people doing bad things & bad people who try to be good (they often fail). Fallen Angels staring to heaven, contrite demons yearning for redemption, down & out junkies scrounging for a dollar, professional killers with family issues. From the child's whisper to the drunkards roar, Callum gives a voice to them all. The Gentleman also puts on a show called Snakeskin Suitcase & runs a weekly gig at one2one cafe.
