Story
Camerata Strings, conductor Patrick Shepherd
Sunday 10 November at 7pm; Merrin School Hall, Avonhead, Christchurch (cnr Merrin and Withells Roads). $10/$5 (student/unwaged); $20 (families). Tickets available at the door.
Story is a concert featuring a collection of miniatures for string orchestra. It takes its name from Story, a three-movement work by New Zealand composer Claire Cowan. Also featuring in the concert is Sibelius’ stirring Andante Festivo, Two Pieces from Henry V by William Walton (from the film of the same name starring Sir Lawrence Olivier) and Nielsen’s Little Suite for Strings. This deceptively simple work is one of Nielsen’s earliest and is a little charmer. Concluding the concert is the cheeky Moa Tango by another New Zealander, Richard Oswin. This was commissioned by Camerata Strings and is a delightful, rhythmic treat.
