A trumpet that flows between the melancholic and the playful. ~ Josiah Blackmore, Cultural Critic
Emotion and verve -- Field's music alternates seamlessly between playfulness and growling sincerity.” ~ Bob Davidson, Author of Jazz Age Barcelona
Canadian trumpeter and composer Mike Field plays at the Waiheke Island Resort, Auckland on Friday 24 January as part of a nine-concert New Zealand tour this summer.
Field is celebrating the release of his second album ‘Rush Mode’ with a New Zealand tour at the Mussel Inn in Takaka on December 29, followed by two performances at the Nelson Jazz Festival, followed by dates during January in Picton, Auckland, Hamilton and finishing the tour on February 1 in National Park.
Field will be joined by local New Zealand musicians Asher Truppman Lattie and George Cook (saxophone), Connor McAneny and Catherine Wells (piano), Cameron McArthur and Chris Wethey (bass), and Adam Tobeck and Jesse Hughes (drums)
Since the release of his first album Ashes in 2011, brilliant jazz man Mike Field has been on the move gigging from one big city to the next – travelling as far afield as Germany, France and even on board a ship to Antarctica. He plays regularly in Los Angeles and Toronto, all the while composing a continuous stream of new material.
Field’s new album ‘Rush Mode’ is an eclectic collection of jazz tunes ranging from classic bebop to Latin-flavoured romps. The through line is as the title suggests, a portrait of the way we live our busy lives, though Field’s take is definitely more on the positive side.
The Mike Field Jazz Quintet plays at the Waiheke Island Resort in Auckland on Friday 24 January. $65 including two-course meal.
