Mamaku’s compelling new show Twigs of Gold offers a wide emotional spectrum, drawing on trip-hop, quirky grooves, poetry and chanson. The lush sound palette, organically electronic, carries evocative multi-lingual vocals, playful loops and rhythmic word. Cinematic layers of altered guitar, flesh out the driving analog-synth bass lines that syncopate with stirring beats. Woodwinds adorn the compositions with luminous lines, harmonies and inspired improvisation. Live-art projections by Lupavision (aka Paul Bradley) transport the viewer into a hypnotic saltimbanque aesthetic, taking you on a dynamic journey through themes of circus, freedom, cross-cultural identity, ecology and transformation. Dark yet playful, contemplative yet dynamic, a kind of grit-and-honey music that will make you move, this show and it’s accompanying album, indebted to Aotearoa/NZ's soil and sea, carry songs of the moment with a truly global sensitivity.
