The loose theme for this Old Hall Gig is ‘country’. We bring you a set by alt-country band Bleakwater, scenes from the West Coast, and a reading by writer John Summers, who likes whittling.
Bleakwater are Wellington’s most unaffected alt-country band. Made up of lap steel guitar, mandolin, banjo and broken bottles, they sing songs about relationships and world weariness. They don’t play often so we’re pleased to have them on the bill at this Old Hall Gig.
Elegies (for the faded) is a collaboration between Wellington-based visual artist Caroline McQuarrie and women’s choir Womansong, directed by Carol Shortis. Exploring abandoned sites on the West Coast of the South Island, the performance utilises video of the sites as they are alongside live vocal music, celebrating the communities that have been lost.
John Summers’ writing is droll, observational and very, very good. He will read some non fiction short pieces out of his upcoming book to be published by Hue & Cry. John is also co-founder and contributor to the outdoor journal www.upcountry.co.nz.
Doors open at 7:30pm, the hall has a limited capacity and this gig will fill up fast, so as always, come early…
