Gig Information

Come along for a celebration of percussion, funk, soul and international music at the Tuning Fork this July as Soul Samba Circus and Twistin' the Swing join forces for one night only.

Soul Samba Circus are based in Newton, Auckland. The 14 piece band sprouted organically out of Grey Lynn Junk Shop in 2010. Their original ingredients were beer, chocolate and a passion for Brazilian percussion.

The Junk Shop jams became a popular hang out and the percussive collective soon found themselves in the company of a range of experienced melody musicians - guitars accordions (yes duelling accordions), trumpet, saxophone, trombone and vocals. These jam sessions quickly became a popular night out at Khuja Lounge, KFM, Galatos and Ima’s.

The band's musical style has been described as an explosion of funkified soul and latin beats. Their performance is firmly rooted in improvisation and it remains a major element of their magic on stage. They play a mix of original songs and uniquely Soul Samba-fied covers with a circus, cabaret energy that will get any crowd engaged. It's an irresistible fusion of Soul and Samba beats, that’ll have you shaking your money maker and stamping your feet.

Twistin’ the Swing is an all-acoustic band mainly influenced by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli inspired Gypsy Jazz.
The band was formed by two young and talented musicians with a great desire to share their passion for Gypsy Jazz music. Incredibly energetic Etienne Bizjak (Belgium) and even-tempered Michael Kovalov (Latvia) clicked instantly. The idea to modernize Gypsy Jazz and make it enjoyable for any generation was what they had in common from the very beginning.
Twistin’ the Swing's repertoire is a great mixture of world and gypsy swing music. They can do Django with their eyes closed and if you’ll get them to open at least one eye, you will hear some great Latin, American Jazz and European music played in their own way.
Having such different personalities in the band has affected the performance which can be described as highly positive and energetic, as well as cool and relaxing, which makes it suitable for any occasion.
