ROB JOASS, SUPPORTED BY THE AMERICANA SESSION.
Wellington singer songwriter Rob Joass, well-known as a member of Hobnail and the Shot Band and as a solo performer, will be showcasing his new solo album, “Black and White” at this concert.
Rob has released five albums with Hobnail, and one full length album and two EPs with the Shot Band. “Black and White” is his second solo album after “Rainlovers”, released 18 years ago.
Rob has earned praise for his songwriting and has had songs covered by bands in New Zealand, Australia and Canada . Hobnail’s album “The Fortune Horses” was a finalist for Best Folk Album while Rob has twice been a finalist for Best Country Song at the NZ music awards.
For this performance at the Wellington Folk Club Rob will be performing songs from the new album as well as favourites from his back catalogue. Filling out some of those arrangements will be the wonderful Kim Bonnington on vocals and guitar, and Cameron “Dusty” Burnell on vocals and mandolin.
Playing in front of Rob will be a loosely knit group of pickers and singers with an affinity for what has come to be called “Americana” music. Though many in the group have been playing this stuff for decades, it’s only in the last few years in Wellington that, thanks primarily to ex-pat fiddler extraordinaire Richard Klein, they’ve managed to “organise”, in a very loose sense of the word.
This session will be organised by another ex-pat, Peter Dyer. True to tradition, the exact form and numbers are anybody’s guess. What’s guaranteed is the pleasure and inspiration this bunch takes from some of the most marvellous, magical, rowdy, beautiful, inventive, funny and heartbreaking music ever-American vernacular music.
Door price $15; $10 students and Acoustic Routes members.
