From honey-sweet falsetto to menacing growl, the voice of Julia Deans has offered light and shade to a variety of musical endeavours over the years. From fronting Fur Patrol’s muscular pop-rock to her electro-pop stylings with Tiki Taane; from co-conspirator with renowned supergroup The Adults to sultry chanteuse in Silo Theatres production BREL; Deans has never shied from adding new strings to her bow.
While many artists blessed with such a fine voice would be content to rely solely on this ability alone, it’s her combination of sharp lyrics and a conscious pop sound in conjunction with her superior vocal talent which sets Julia Deans apart. In concert she is as warm as she is honest, proving herself a larrikin storyteller as well as a mesmerising performer.
Having wrapped up the mixes for her soon-to-be-released new album, We Light Fire, Julia is slipping down to Paekakariki to test drive some of these new songs in the warm & intimate setting of St Peter's Hall.
Deans will be joined by the velvet-voiced Nadia Reid. Reid presents tales of love and loss through a new-folk glass, echoing songwriters such as Beth Orton or Laura Marling. She carries her stripped back, acoustic songs to audiences with poise and a grace that belies her young age.
