In support of TEAR Fund New Zealand! Gaza Appeal

All proceeds to Tearfund NZ for Gaza Crisis. Keep an eye on this page for updates on this event: whos playing, whats happening. This will be a huge underground effort.

A collection of independent folk singer/songwriter bands, electronica, beatmakers, hip hop acts and visual artists/photographers have felt compelled to get together at Wine Cellar+Whammy Bar on Friday 10th October, 8pm to 1am to create a mesmerizing and resonating night of performances and silent auction art-exhibit in support of Tearfund NZs campaign for helping displaced families in crisis in Gaza. Click the website for full details.

...it was the moment with disbelieving attention, watching the live update broadcast on alternative news channels that I witnessed the words of an arthritic elderly grandmother pulled seconds from disaster. Only lucky to be alive by fractional moments. But she didn’t think so.

I can’t seem to rationalise the shift from mind to heart as I heard her, beyond despair and vengeance, call out to the sky and rubble for her grandchildren. She was alone at home. The grandkids at play. The parents at work. And then they were gone...literally in smoke and fire.

She yelled out to an unforgiving, dense, blackened day, begging to know what her grandchildren are guilty of … what weapon did her under 5s wield to justify this Destroyed by tanks, rockets, and artillery. In split seconds, neighbours dragged her disabled body out. The smallest time frame was the ugliest and slowest moment she had ever seen … children left behind. Fire. Destruction.

That was the moment when I dry wretched on the floor and something deep inside me, deeper than my gut, below whatever physical being I am, seemed to speak from inside out “...what is this hell…” I couldn’t find a single thing to say to myself that was a humanly convincing answer for her.

Thinking of her now breaks me.

I’m barely a songwriter. I usually play at Wine Cellar. What in this hell could I do

Maybe I could find a way to take the call for urgent humanitarian aid out from the political and religious rhetoric, life-wasting armchair argumentative dribble, and take it underground and find the innovators that want to respond.
