Auckland blues musicians return to upper south island
After blowing the roof off the Nelson Jazz Festival, blues musicians Tom Rodwell and Coco Davis - also known as the front-persons of Auckland band Storehouse - return to the upper South Island for a further skirmish of salacious R&B and calypso music.
The duo appear on Saturday 17th January at acclaimed Golden Bay venue the Mussel Inn, and then appear at Nelson’s Boathouse on Friday 23rd, and the Dharma Bum’s Club in the Wairau Valley on Saturday 24th.
Listeners can expect an audacious travelogue through slave-era spirituals, antique pre-war blues, classic rhythm and blues and into the rude and racy world of calypso music, with the occasional spontaneous improvisation and eccentric original thrown in for good measure. “The only content of this music is the feeling,” says singer / guitarist Rodwell, “and we endeavour to reach places on the spectrum that other bands can’t touch. Music should sometimes be cathartic - but you can reach that through dance rhythms too, surely.”
Described by the NME as “Sheffield’s answer to Lightnin’ Hopkins,” the footstomping slide player has appeared widely through Europe, NZ and the US and as a session player has worked with a variety of artists, including collaborating extensively on Don McGlashan’s new album.
Vocalist Davis is known for her genre-busting takes on early female blues, and as an actress has worked in recent Auckland Theatre Company shows Cabaret, Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors, Jesus Christ Superstar and in the critically acclaimed contemporary New Zealand musical Daffodils. Her debut album “Old Haunts” is due for release in 2015 on Fireplace Recordings.
