Expressing everything from the raucous to the delicate, the Harmolodic Bird draws on the spacious improvised sound of an American jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman. His musical philosophy and improvisational method is known as 'Harmolodics'. Along with pocket trumpet player, Don Cherry, he created a new jazz avant-garde that would have a widespread influence, not only on jazz but music generally.
The Harmolodic Bird explores this approach with playful melodies, grooves that boogie, burn and fall over, all with the absence of traditional jazz chordal instruments, piano and guitar. The Harmolodic Bird create a spacious sound with a strong focus on the interactions between rhythm and melody.
The Harmolodic Bird are Jeff Henderson (baritone, alto sax), Rueben Derrick (tenor saxophone, clarinet), Gerard Crewdson (trombone, pocket trumpet), Tom Callwood (double bass) and Joe McCallum (drums).
