Gig Information

Matterhorn & Strange Behaviour keep the good vibes coming over the winter months with our next international guest, Harvey Sutherland, whose music has been described as, Kind of like Arthur Russell wearing John Oates's moustache while making love to Cat Stevens circa Izitso”.

Hailing from Melbourne, his jazz-tinged fusion of house and boogie set his EP’s, 'Edges' and 'Brothers', apart in 2014, with support from prominent tastemakers Bradley Zero, Tom Noble and Motor City Drum Ensemble, and we’re excited to host this incredibly talented producer for his Wellington debut.

A one-time session player and behind-the-scenes man, analog synthesist Harvey Sutherland emerged from Melbourne’s bubbling underground with a cassette tape in hand. 2013’s 'Nexus' EP on This Thing Records – a trip through lo-fi boogie and Roland house music – was a cult hit amongst dance floor aficionados and primed listeners for his acclaimed 12″s on Echovolt and Voyage Recordings. His music has been played and appreciated worldwide, and he’s currently on tour throughout Europe in support of his upcoming 'Bermuda' EP for MCDE Recordings.

Sutherland’s improvisational live show – equal parts 808 rattle and double disco clap – is an evolving, synthetic boogie exploration. Manning the controls of the mighty Juno 60 synthesiser, Harvey sweats it out with the crowd, looping new phrases and modulations, pitch-bent solos and the occasional Janet Jackson cover into a heavy four-to-the-floor throwdown. A local favourite in a city well known for its underground exports, Sutherland leaves the knob-twiddlers scratching their chins and the dance floor a hot mess.

Matterhorn & Strange Behaviour have been lucky enough to bring you some amazing acts so far, including Session Victim, Red Rack’em, Frank Booker and Inkswel, all of whom played inspirational sets, making for good vibes and some great dancing, and we’ve still got Iron Curtis, and Dicky Trisco to come over the winter months. It’s been a great journey so far, and we hope you can join us for Harvey Sutherland on June 20.
