The Broken Heartbreakers have been tweaking heartstrings and making eyes misty with their original big lonesome little heart songs since 2002. A compassionate and compelling live act with nods to west coast US folk, The Broken Heartbreakers’ music mixes the bleak with the beautiful, drawing on deep roots of country, folk and classic pop melody, but with a defiant and subversive twist and just a touch of modern electricity.

The Broken Heartbreakers have toured extensively, charming audiences with their rich harmonies and warm instrumentation and along the way have shared the stage with song-writing heavyweights including The Handsome Family, Lou Barlow and more recently Mick Harvey.

Song-writing core duo Rachel Bailey and John Guy Howell moved back to John’s hometown of Dunedin in 2013 after an extended period overseas, living, performing and recording in Melbourne, Europe, the UK, and Ireland. Their current live lineup includes Jeff Harford (formerly of Bored Games, The Rip and My Deviant Daughter) on drums and joining them for their forthcoming new album release tour will be one NZ’s most in demand bassists, Richard Pickard.

It is nearly five years since The Broken Heartbreakers released their second album Wintersun to excellent reviews and response, and in that time a lot has changed and their sound has evolved once again. How We Got To Now, their third and latest album set for release, October 1, is a sonic shift for the band, with a stronger electric sound and diverse group of songs, some returning to build on previous approaches while others travel on into uncharted waters.
The Broken Heartbreakers are looking forward to playing songs off the new album with “a few favourite oldies, depending on audience demand” says Bailey.

Special guests for this show are Lyttelton favourite Reb Fountain and Auckland based Steve Abel. Hailing originally from southern California, Reb sailed into Lyttelton Harbour carrying generations of migrant stories imbued in her bones. She has spent 20 years travelling, performing, studying, recording and working as a musician and songwriter who’s not afraid to get her $20 ex-army boots muddy as hell walkin’ to the next town for a show.
