FEATURING: THE EASTERN + SPECIAL GUESTS

The grand old dame of weird, the matriarch of the bizarre, the holy mother of the high church of the good time, is celebrating.

After 25 years of service and on the way to 25 more, Lyttelton’s venerable institution of strange The Wunderbar is putting a mark in the road and offering to share it with all comers.

December 4th see’s the iconic venue and public house throw open its doors, as its done for most nights over the past 25 years, and provide its traditional rough and tumble entertainment but this time with a purpose.

A birthday party is a fine excuse for a hooley, and having hosted more than its share since its opening, owners Deb and Andrew thought it sound to shine a light on the old girl herself and let people offer their congratulations and salutations in an appropriate setting.

Providing entertainment will be a motley crue, an assortment of old Wunderbar faces and new, including the return of Wunderbar fixtures The Eastern, playing for the first time in ChCh after an extended break.

Poets, DJs, musicians and drag acts will populate both front bar and back, laying the gilt edge to a night which is sure to be remembered.

Since opening in the spring of 1990 The Wunderbar has played host to just about every notable NZ act that has toured in the past quarter century and sparked the curiosity of many more.

The Wunderbar rose up from the rubble three times after the Canterbury Earthquakes, shaken but not broken. And each time she was packed to the gunnels with music and hope to raise her mighty roof.

She remains the true heart of the now iconic ‘Lyttelton Sound’ and is attributed with being the birthplace of ‘local heroes’ and ‘national treasures’ The Eastern.
