The Auckland Chamber Orchestra is proud to announce that all concerts in the 2016 season are free admission. Musical Director Peter Scholes quotes Coco Chanel, saying “the best things in life are free. The second best things are very, very expensive.” Scholes is thrilled to be able to make diverse programmes of classical music accessible and available to all, without the barrier of the cost of a ticket.
This year’s first concert opens in a blaze of brass and woodwind, with Hindemith’s expressionistic post-war ballet-pantomime The Demon; and Poulenc’s buoyant and witty dances for horn, trumpet and trombone performed with panache by Ace Brass. Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet is one of the most well-known and loved of his works; and Peter Scholes is joined by fellow clarinettist Donald Nicholls to perform Poulenc’s Sonata for Two Clarinets, originally commissioned by Benny Goodman.
