Rodney Fisher came to national attention as a songwriter and co-frontperson of alt pop band Goodshirt. A string of hit songs in the early 2000s such as Sophie, Fiji Baby, and Green made the band a household name in New Zealand, and kicked off an international career which saw them tour on a large scale in New Zealand, Australia and Japan.
As Goodshirt wound down in 2005, Fisher toured in Zane Lowe's Breaks Co-Op, playing such UK festivals as Hyde Park Calling and Oxegen, and performing on Top Of The Pops. Attracted by his experiences in the UK, he decided to live in London, where he started a band to perform songs under his own name. The band became entrenched in the early shoots of folk revival in London, and supported the likes of Mumford and Sons, Cate Le Bon and Woodpigeon.
Since returning to New Zealand in 2011, Fisher has been active as a promoter, television and radio host and mentor to younger musicians, as well an occasional performer in solo guise and with the reformed Goodshirt.
Songs from the Backyard is a snapshot of Fisher's first solo work after Goodshirt. Recorded in 2005 but never officially released in digital form, The EP is available online on Friday 6th May.
