The Auckland Chamber Orchestra presents its second free concert for 2016, featuring charismatic international pianist Henry Wong Doe performing Mozart’s dramatic piano concerto no.20. Wong Doe was last heard with the ACO last year, when he received glowing reviews for his performance of Hindemith’s Kammermusik no.2: “…this 1924 concerto was set of like a firecracker by the flamboyantly capable Henry Wong Doe, leading the hip players around him on a frisky game of musical tag.”
The orchestra will also be performing Preludes and Fugue by 20th century powerhouse Witold Lutoslawski. An example of ACO’s commitment to providing ear-opening experiences, the composer says of the work that it is difficult to describe it in words, as “the music begins where the words end…”
The concert will open with Aquae Sulis by master of evocative orchestrations, Leonie Holmes. The work creates a subterranean atmosphere rich with images of steaming pools and dripping water.
