Following the huge success of the inaugural Festival in 2014, the Wallace International Piano
Festival will be held in Auckland from 7-10 July 2016 at the University of Auckland’s School of Music. With generous sponsorship once again from The Wallace Foundation, this festival is presented in association with the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust and the University of Auckland. With a wonderful line-up of soloists and teachers this promises to be an inspirational event for young players from throughout the country. It targets university and high school students, providing an opportunity for them to enjoy the company of other young pianists, to gain input from world-class teachers and to enjoy some wonderful recitals. For teachers and young professionals it is a chance to observe some fine teaching and playing in an inclusive environment.

We are delighted to welcome back NZ pianist Read Gainsford, well-known to NZ audiences for his charismatic teaching style and powerful performances. Albert Tiu comes to us from Singapore, where he teaches at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, and travels extensively to teach and play.
Perhaps most exciting of all is the return visit of one of the world’s most exciting pianists, Boris Giltburg. Many will remember his astonishing recital in Auckland in 2012. Since then his career has taken off in a spectacular way, after taking 1st prize in the Queen Elizabeth Competition in 2013, and he is currently the preferred pianist for the record label Naxos, with a full discography planned over
the coming years. We are thrilled to be able to bring him back to New Zealand. Since his busy schedule only allows him to be with us for his recital and two masterclasses, New Zealand’s foremost pianist Michael Houstoun has agreed to take further masterclasses on Friday and Saturday.

Once again, the Wallace National Junior Piano Competition will be held within the festival. Sixteen young New Zealand school-age pianists have been selected by DVD audition to compete. Prizes totalling more than $4000 will be awarded by adjudicators Read Gainsford and Albert Tiu. The winner of the inaugural competition was Auckland pianist Delvan Lin, who went on to win the Wallace
National Piano Competition a year later in 2015. Delvan closes this year’s festival with a recital, as part of his prize package.

All events are open to the public, providing an inspiring four days of recitals and masterclasses.
