Off the back of a fruitful year in composition hibernation, Steve Barry premiers a new suite of music for quartet and duo featuring saxophonist Martin Kay.
Barry’s latest output fuses melodicism with modernism and minimalism in equal measure, utilising pitch-class theory as a driver for new harmonic zones and approaches to semi-structured ensemble improvisation.
Having worked together extensively for the past few years, Barry and Kay embrace an intuitive approach to free improvisation, guided by Barry’s open-notation sketches in the style of Morton Feldman and American experimental pianist Matt Mitchell.
Expect a raucous melting-pot of influences with a few re-workings of jazz standards thrown in for good measure!
Martin Kay is accomplished and prolific saxophonist, clarinetist, improviser and composer, having released ten albums as a leader and co-leader over the past ten years. A current PhD candidate at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Martin’s compositions have been performed across the globe.
