In 1996, the New Pacific Music Ensemble was formed in pursuit of new forms and combinations of island rhythms and instruments. By combining an array of cultural identities, the ensemble seek a concept of ‘inter-culture’, producing a new, unique musical identity.
In their embracing conflict and complication within the musical relationships, the NPME aim to avoid a layering of culture, where sympathetic identities are stacked atop or side by side each other, striving instead to arrive at new, original forms through synthesis.
