Tom Rodwell - “Rythmes Sacrés de la Guitare électrique Primitiviste et Absurde”
FREIDA MARGOLIS
440 RICHMOND ROAD, GREY LYNN, AUCKLAND
SUNDAY 16 JULY
7PM
Join slide guitarist Tom Rodwell for a hip-shaking excursion into the interlocked idioms of blues, calypso and spirituals, blurring the boundary between purism and reimagination. Featuring rare and racy source material from coastal Georgia, Trinidad, the Bahamas, and up into the American delta and beyond, Rodwell - “Sheffield’s answer to Lightnin’ Hopkins,” NME - is always game to refashion his music in the moment. “The concept of musical authenticity is a dubious, pretty reactionary one,” says Rodwell. His solution' Add a dash of absurdist wit to the boogie.
“By turns wild, angry, hypnotic and sensual, it’s as uncompromising as it is funky and some of the best live music I’ve seen,” - Blues in London.
“You don’t hear that anymore! Beautiful tunes, beautiful groove,” Derek Trucks.
Best known for his band Storehouse (globally active since 2003), Rodwell has supported Leon Russell, Derek Trucks, Otis Taylor, Kitty Daisy & Lewis, Son of Dave, Trinity Roots, C.W. Stoneking, and records and tours with Don McGlashan amongst others.
