Gig Information

Luke Wood and Bruce Russell present their new limited-edition 12-inch record; Visceral Realists.

Wood and Russell will discuss the project’s unrequited beginnings, its design and production processes, and some thoughts about making records in general. The discussion will be followed by a live performance approximating upcoming hits from the album.

The album itself will be on exhibition—available to be looked at, touched, and listened to—at Strange Haven from 1–9 December. Following which a limited number of albums will be made available for sale through Ilam Press Records.

Kicks off at 7.30pm. Free entry. BYO alcohol.

Bruce Russell is an improvising sound artist, who since 1987 has been a member of the Dead C. This genre-dissolving New Zealand trio mixes rock, electro-acoustics and noise. He has also been active as a solo artist, and directed two independent labels, Xpressway and Corpus Hermeticum. He writes essays and criticism for The Wire, artists’ catalogues, and other publications. In 2010 published Left-handed blows: writing on sound 1993-2009 (Auckland: Clouds), and in 2012 edited Erewhon calling: experimental sound in New Zealand (Auckland: Audio Foundation/cmr). He has a doctorate in sound from the RMIT School of Art. In his spare time he manages the School of Art and Design at Ara Institute of Canterbury.

Luke Wood is a graphic designer and musician based in the quake-ridden wasteland of Christchurch. He currently works as a Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design at the University of Cantebury’s ‘Ilam’ School of Fine Arts, where in 2010 he established The Ilam Press with colleague Aaron Beehre. More recently he has set up a subsidiary enterprise, Ilam Press Records. Luke’s practice has often combined the roles of editor, designer, printer and publisher. He founded The National Grid, a New Zealand graphic design journal, in 2006 with Jonty Valentine. He then produced Head Full of Snakes, a multi-award winning motorcycle magazine with a cultural bent, with Stuart Geddes (Melbourne) in 2011. Luke also plays guitar in various bands and performs regularly around town.
