Pyramid Club presents The Sublime Music of Steve Lacy and Peter Daly and the Strange Strings as part of Wellington Jazz Festival's 2018 programme.

THE SUBLIME MUSIC OF STEVE LACY

Chris O'Connor (drums), John Bell (vibes) and Greg Malcolm (guitar/objects) perform music by the late, great, jazz composer

A creative musician of startling originality, Chris O'Connor is New Zealand's most in-demand drummer and a list of his collaborators reads like a who's-who of the New Zealand music scene, from the anthemic pop of The Mockers to the hyper-intense noise jazz of The Snouts, and practically everyone in between. A long-time devotee of the music of Steve Lacy (O'Connor performed with Lacy at the 1998 Wellington Jazz Festival), Chris O'Connor has found the perfect partner and fellow Lacy-o-phile in guitarist Greg Malcolm. Malcolm has been adapting Steve Lacy's music to the guitar for several decades, and Lacy's compositions (originally written for soprano sax) give an ethereal and vibrant interpretation on six strings. The trio is rounded off by the bell-like chimes of John Bell's vibraphone.

Recognised as one of the most important players of soprano saxophone, Steve Lacy (1934–2004) contributed a unique body of compositions to the jazz repertoire. From a progressive Dixieland musician in the 1950s, his long and prolific career included a stint in Thelonious Monk’s band. With an interest in experimental jazz and to a lesser extent free improvisation, Lacy's music was typically melodic and tightly-structured. His highly distinctive compositions are often built out of little more than a single questioning phrase, repeated several times. This is your chance to hear the music of this great composer through the lens of three of New Zealand’s leading jazz performers.

PETER DALY and the STRANGE STRINGS

Unearthly jazz by a smorgasbord of bowed and plucked strings.

A delightful evening awaits with exceptional viola player Peter Daly at the helm. This inspired improviser and true virtuoso has developed his own unique style and approach to the instrument and been a stalwart of the Wellington creative music scene since the early 1980s.

He is joined for this performance by the Strange Strings, an ensemble featuring Nell Thomas, Jonny Marks, Daniel Beban, Erika Grant, Chris O'Connor and more playing an assortment of bowed and plucked string instruments including harp, autoharp, ektar, dulcimer and other invented and adapted instruments.
