Here's Five: Polish Club Share Songs That Influenced 'Alright Already'

Thursday 29th June, 2017 2:54PM

Sydney blues rock duo Polish Club will be on New Zealand soil this weekend for two shows off-the-back of releasing their debut album Alright Already last March. Hailed as "Stax meets Stooges', the 14-song album was laid down in eight days with Wolf & Cub's Wade Keighran at the mixing desk helping the two-piece capture their blistering efforts. In anticipation of their visit, vocalist and guitarist Novak shared some songs that influenced them when forging their sound...

1. The Shouting Matches - 'I Had A Real Good Lover'
The Shouting Matches is Justin Vernon’s old blues duo. This is the song that made us realise that, as a two-piece, we didn’t need to go full speed all the time.

2. The Oblivians - Strong Come On

The Oblivions are a Memphis band that preceded The Reatards. Pretty rad mix of old time rock ’n’ roll and garage punk.

3. The Ronettes - Be My Baby

When we were trying to figure out what we wanted to do I was pretty keen to write Motown kinda stuff. It didn’t really work but we are always trying to shoehorn in Motown feels. This song is one of the best pop songs ever I reckon.

4. The Strokes - 'Under Control'

The Strokes are easily Novak’s favourite band. He would literally have Julian’s babies if he asked him to (or at least a long term relationship).

5. White Denim - Let's Talk About It

White Denims’s first EP and their album Fits really touch us in our sweet spot. White Denim just make really refreshing rock ’n’ roll. However, I kinda miss when they were a filthy three piece. They are a bit tidy nowadays.
