Wellington's Loam Shares Atmospheric Opus 'Sonder / Monolith'

Friday 27th October, 2017 11:22AM

Wellington-based drone artist Loam, aka Spook The Horses guitarist Donnie Cuzens, has lifted the lid on a new EP called Sonder / Monolith. The two-track opus features lengthy sustained notes and synthesiser swells, with ‘Sonder’ feeling as though it wouldn't sound out of place on the soundtrack to Bladerunner. Cuzens has evidently been keeping busy, with Spook The Horses gearing up to release their new album People Used To Live Here. Cuzens shared some insight into the formation of the pieces...

"Sonder and Monolith were made over the last three weeks and were largely inspired by the music, sound design and aesthetic direction of Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049. As such they are meant to evoke images of towering brutalist architecture, sprawling metropolis and ink-black darkness surrounding it all. I solely used my microKORG XL to create the sounds, including the vocoder/microphone."
