Weekly Round Up: Friday 17th November

Friday 17th November, 2017 6:58PM

It’s been a huge week in music with New Zealand pop sensation Lorde winning big at this year’s Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards alongside Tui winners Aldous Harding, SWIDT, Ladi6 and more. We featured snaps from Lorde’s performance at Auckland’s Powerstation, along with images of Lyttelton superstar Marlon Williams’ performance at Wellington’s San Fran. We also ran images of The Beths’ recent show at Galatos, legendary US rapper GZA’s performance at San Fran, songwriter extraordinaire Lawrence Arabia’s show at Golden Dawn Tavern, and pics from drum virtuoso Mike Portnoy’s Shattered Fortress performance at The Studio.

This week we were stoked to premiere the new video by Wellington sound artist Flo Wilson, and the latest catchy four song collection from Dunedin alt-pop duo Two Cartoons. The wonderful Angel Olsen shared her thoughts on her latest release, and The Shins’ songwriter James Mercer generously leant his time to talk about his band’s upcoming visit to New Zealand. There’s a tonne of awesome shows lined up for the near future, including Australian dance innovators Cut Copy returning to Auckland, and iconic 90s artists TLC and Boyz II Men who'll be back in January.

In overseas release news, workaholic Australian psych-rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard unveiled their fourth album this year for free download(!), Icelandic pop visionary Bjork shared her latest video ‘Blissing Me’ from her highly anticipated new album, Australian pop-rocker Alex Cameron released an unforgettable video ahead of his upcoming North Island tour, and Kevin Parker’s Tame Impala dropped three unreleased songs out of the blue.

Local releases were equally solid, including a great EP from Auckland rapper Lion Dixon, the Musical Electronics Library’s fundraising compilation featuring The Trendees, Ducklingmonster and more, split singles from new experimental label mf/mp, and Bulletbelt’s short film documenting the making of their forthcoming album Nine Centuries.

Our Caught Live video for the week features Australian artist Alex Cameron who will be visiting New Zealand this coming February. Here he is performing a live acoustic cover rendition of his song ‘True Lies’ accompanied by saxophonist Roy Molloy for Issue Magazine
