Premiere: Sal Valentine Shares Video 'Just Another Lover'

Tuesday 28th November, 2017 11:41AM

Auckland indie soul artist Sal Valentine has shared a lyric video to accompany his hip-shaking single ‘Just Another Lover’ ahead of a fundraiser show this Friday at Neck of the Woods. The show aims to raise funds towards the completion of Valentine’s new album, early studio sessions also reaped his recent Church EP. The new clip directed by Dahnu Graham (Beach Pigs) shows the artist all in grey, grooving in his backyard and dancing though various Auckland cultural landmarks, and features a wry cameo appearance from Elizabeth Stokes (The Beths).

Valentine’s live band is a room-filling party in itself, with ten members cramming onto stages to play his tunes. Check out the new clip and read on for the artist’s thoughts on the video and Friday's fundraiser with pals Molly and the Chromatics

“Shot in one day around the central Auckland region, I think the video speaks for itself in a lot of ways. We wanted to showcase my marginally-better-than-average dancing ability in some kind of surreal footloose buzz, and have fun day whilst doing so - I think we achieved that. I even get like elbow dropped and beaten at one point by the the landlord of the studio we work from - #golden moments for sure.

My new album is in the mixing stage. We started work at the end of 2015, and ended up with a surplus of older material with more of a rock aesthetic, which ended up on the 'Church EP' - the remaining collection of songs is cohesive both lyrically and sonically. It's been a lengthy process, but I'm hoping when it's released, I will feel some kind of overwhelming sense of accomplishment. Rather than just fear and dread, which is kind of where I'm at now.

Like a lot of indie bands, through necessity we're doing / funding everything ourselves - production, recording and mixing. My keys mans Jonathan Pearce (Anthonie Tonnon, Lawrence Arabia, The Beths, Clap Clap Riot) is our engineer and whilst his fees are reasonable he has a huge backlog of unpaid gambling debts that we need to settle. So please dig deep, buy like ten tickets to this Friday's show and help us not only keep the debt collectors at bay but also finish what I'd consider is actually turning about to be a really great album.”

Sal Valentine’s latest 'Church EP' is available now via Spotify.
