Chris Cornell Plays 'You Never Knew My Mind' By Johnny Cash

Tuesday 27th February, 2018 11:44AM

A recording has emerged of sadly deceased Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell playing an interpretation of country music legend Johnny Cash's poem 'You Never Knew My Mind'. The song features on an upcoming compilation titled Johnny Cash: Forever Words, which includes renditions of Cash's poetry by Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, the Jayhawks, Kris Kristofferson and more. Cash famously covered Soundgarden's hit 'Rusty Cage' at producer Rick Rubin's urging on his 1996 album Unchained, Cornell returned the favour with this heartfelt musical version of Cash's words. Cornell spoke of Cash at the time he recorded 'You Never Knew My Mind'...

“I met the man once or twice in my life, and he was so gracious and he was such an influence on me as a musician. And he also covered a song that I wrote. Since that time, I’ve felt like he’s maybe one of the bigger presences in my life, in terms of artists that I’m a fan of.”

'Johnny Cash: Forever Words' is out Friday 6th April via Legacy Recordings.
