Listen: PJ Harvey - Shaker Aamer

PJ Harvey has made a bold statement with her latest single 'Shaker Aamer'. It pledges support for the last British resident remaining in the US detention centre at Guantanamo Bay. Aamer was arrested in Afghanistan in 2001 and has been held in the prison since 2002, without facing trial or even being charged. He was cleared for release by President Bush in 2007 and President Obama in 2009, but has yet to be freed.

PJ Harvey's lyrics give a cutting description of the conditions Shaker Aamer has been facing for more than a decade. The British government has repeatedly demanded Aamer be returned to the UK, and the US announced last week that it's about to start a new round of transfers from the prison, but Aamer will remain locked up for the time being. Along with over half of the other prisoners, Aamer is currently on a hunger strike in protest of his illegal detention. Have a listen to PJ Harvey's song about his experiences below:
