Dear Diary: Carb On Carb in China, November 2013

Monday 2nd December, 2013 9:00AM

The latest addition of our new Dear Diary feature comes from Auckland duo Carb on Carb who recently took on China with god bows to math.  Below, they've provided us an insight into their tour with an account of their final day along with a few fun holiday snaps...

Carb on Carb - Shenzhen, China  - Saturday 23rd November, 2013

Last day of the tour already. We're in Shenzhen, right at the bottom of China at the border with Hong Kong. Pretty tropical here, 22 degrees at night, nice and sweaty after the wintry north. One of the second tier of cities in China, a lowly 10,000,000 people.

We start the day with a visit to Window of the World - a theme park of miniatures of wonders of the world with performances and rides. It seems its main function is to be the backdrop of innumerable selfies...

We do some pretending to be giants and took a bunch of photos, while hundreds of kids in matching tracksuits yell hellos at us...

Then head over to the Oceania area to check out the 'maorish village'. It's a bizarre mixture of any and all pacific nations with a wharenui emblazoned with "aloha". We tentatively join a crowd to watch a 'ethnic song and dance'. Like the wharenui it's a strange mixture of hula dancing to Polynesian drums with some pukanas thrown in. We leave feeling a little dazed...

We meet up with a guy called Howie who is our tour manager for the night - he's awesome and we get along straight away. He sets up a great merch table which Sam and Martin instantly pillage. The show is set to start at 7.30. At 7.25 there is no one there, at 7.35 there's heaps.

And then we get up and play the last show of the tour. Like almost all the shows there are no support bands. Which is strange and a bummer, but it's a different scene.

We play really well which is surprising as we are so exhausted. We even have a scissor jumping competition with god bows...

Which god bows win - Martin is unstoppable....

A crowd favourite of their set is their Pairs' (Shanghai band) cover which winds a couple of kids into a frenzy...

We go out for a meal at the local after show classic and have some dope rice rolls. We're all feeling satisfied and a bit sad to be at the end of the tour. As always it's over before we're ready, but we're stoked we came.
