Listen: Grouper - Holding
A few weeks ago Grouper, the solo moniker of Portland ambient artist Liz Harris, unveiled 'Call Across Rooms' from her upcoming 10th studio album Ruins. Now, Harris is sharing stretching single 'Holding', another beautiful example of the work that emerged from the musician's residency in Portugal during 2011. She recorded the whole album (except the last song) while on the residency, using a portable 4-track, a Sony stereo mic and an upright piano.
"When I wasn't recording songs I was hiking several miles to the beach. The path wound through the ruins of several old estates and a small village," she says. "The album is a document. A nod to that daily walk. Failed structures. Living in the remains of love ... I hope that the album bears some resemblance to the place that I was in."
