Record Store Day 2015 In New Zealand

Record Store Day 2015 In New Zealand

Tuesday 14th April, 2015 11:06AM

It's nearly upon us. Record Store Day, the international event that was founded in 2007 to celebrate independent record stores, just seems to be going from strength-to-strength each year. This year's RSD falls on Saturday 18th April and there is an amazing array of in-stores on the bill at stores around the country. Here is a list of some of the appearances that local vinyl merchants have lined up, but make sure you head to their sites to check out the full schedules as well as the special Record Store Day releases that are up for grabs...

Real Groovy Records - Queen Street, Auckland

The iconic Real Groovy store will be hosting a full day of events from 9am until closing time, with highlight live performances from The Cleves (aka Bitch), The Echo Ohs and Larry's Rebels. There will also be DJ sets from Lo Key, Tina Turntables, Kody Nielson Pennie Black and Marty Duda to entertain you while you flip through the racks.

For the full schedule head to the Real Groovy website

Southbound Records - 132 Symonds Street, Auckland

Southbound will be celebrating RSD in style from their sweet new digs on Symonds Street, where they will play host to live set from SJD, who is celebrating the release of new album Saint John Divine at 3pm. Then at 4.30pm Don McGlashan will be playing an acoustic set to mark the unveiling of his brand new album Lucky Stars. And to top it off Delaney Davidson will be making his customary appearance and signing records. The folk at Southbound will also have their shelves crammed with more than 250 special RSD releases for you to peruse.

Flying Out - 80 Pitt Street, Auckland

As we mentioned yesterday, Flying Out are graduating from an online entity and opening up their very own physical store in central Auckland, with their first day of business scheduled for Record Store Day. At this stage, we aren't too sure what they've got planned for the big day, but we reckon it's definitely worth poking your head in for a wee nosy.

Slow Boat Records - Cuba Street, Wellington

A long advocate of Record Store Day, Slow Boat Records have a special day planned including an instore performance by the one-and-only Neil Finn, who will be playing songs from his vast back-catalogue. But the fun doesn't stop there - the talented Tami Neilson will also be making an appearance sure to rattle the store's foundations. On top of all that, a string quartet from Orchestra Wellington will be there to mix things up.

Death Ray Records - 3 Wilson Street, Newtown

The activities start with one-man band Mono-Sonic at 2pm, who will be followed by surf-blues duo the Crunge for their special Death Ray tape release at 3.30pm. Then, the party shifts to Newtown venue Moon, where rockabilly guitarist Connie Benson will be shredding things up with The Springolaters.
