Maisey Rika

Maisey Rika

About Maisey Rika from Whakatane

If you were to take a scenic journey doen the eastern coast of New Zealand, you would most hear the sounds of waves crashing on the beach, Tui's calling from the trees and the spiritual sound of Maisey Rika. Hailing from Whakatane, this singer/songwriter has a powerful yet majestic voice that captivates audiences worldwide.

Maisey has been singing all her life, and age 13 began singing professionally. She recorded "E Hine", a classic collection of traditional Maori songs. 'E Hine' went double platinum and also won 'Best Maori Language Album' at the NZ Music Awards. Maisey was also nominated for "Best Female Vocalist" in 1998 at just 15 years old.

Since then Maisey has toured the world as a lead vocalist with her traditional song and dance Kapa Haka group. Performing in such places as Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan and Australia.

Maisey Rika has now finished her highly anticipated EP of original songs and is working on a debut album to follow. Her brother and co-writer JJ, plays enchanting acoustic melodies to back up Maisey's spine tingling fusion of English and Maori lyrics.
Together with top New Zealand producers, Simon Halloway and Mahuia Bridgeman-Cooper, Maisey has developed a poetic soundscape of folk, soul and easy listening. Songs on her EP include her breakthrough YouTube introduction 'Children of Romania' (120,000 views), a song based upon orphaned children in Romania.

Over the last 7 months Maisey has been working hard to record and perfect 12 new tracks for her debut full length album of original songs.

Her album is titled 'TOHU' which is a Maori word that means; signs, symbolism, instruction and direction which all portray the types of meanings most of her poetic songs are about.

TOHU released on Oct 12th nation-wide and online (world wide). This is definately an album to have.
