the u.s.s.a
About the u.s.s.a from Auckland
Three happily married losers play noise/pop with post-punk undertones; can't sing, but try. We possess an array of sweet British amps, Japanese guitars and American drums which make us sound better than we really are, and most certainly look cool.
The U.S.S.A started as a non-committal two piece project on the basis that if it sucked, it would go no further. After a few practices and an incomplete demo, we decided to add a guitarist and keep going.
We are old (except Phil), cynical and somewhat disdainful of musical trends and cycles. With that in mind, the broad consensus is that we really have nothing to prove as a band, and do not wish to step outside of the d.i.y. approach which has served us well in previous bands.
Our music is an extension of our lives in our city, and a strong sense of local-ism is intrinsic to the lyrical identity of the band. That said, literature, geopolitics, culture and history are as important in our lyrics as personal themes, and our musical influences are predominately American. Given that they are the empire of our times, and that their culture has globalised most successfully in the last half century as well as the foreseeable future, this should come as no surprise, and we do not see it as contradictory to our aim of fully reflecting local-ism. After all, we owe the very idea to Frank O'Hara anyway.
We are:
Dan-vocals, guitar.
John-drums.
Phil-guitar, vocals.
This Saturday at Whammy with Freudoids, Demi Whores and others. It's free, too.
