Mama Tilly
About Mama Tilly from Wellington
Our Vision: "To use our colourful
quirkiness & social conscience to create music that's unpredictable
and brings soul to the world"
Forget the old music industry adages, Wellington-based Mama Tilly is
NOT your garden variety all-chick gig. Gorgeous and gifted though they
may be, this is an ensemble that knows how to do away with clichés –
and how to put in the hard yards.
Determined to take the ‘slow-but-exquisitely-trained’ route,
founding members Lauren, Georgy and Lis studied together at
Wellington’s acclaimed Whitireia music school where their combined
creative energies “just clicked.” While on the hunt for a lead
vocalist, Lis met Mahinarangi at a ‘Making it in Music’ seminar and Ila
is the latest addition to the band, having studied at the New Zealand
School of Music.
Each brings something quite unique and individual to Mama Tilly,
creating a sound that’s beautifully layered and harmoniously balanced.
Their influences and cultural flavours converge into a potent musical
infusion, swinging from soulful tender blues to raucous sexy
psychedelia - whatever your expectations Mama Tilly will change them.
Bucking the trend in every way, a typical ‘girl band’ these
women are not. Having released their debut EP ‘Silhouettes &
Footsteps’ (recorded at Matrix Digital Studio in Wellington) Mama Tilly
is without a doubt, a band on the rise and with their determination,
talent and drive, fate most definitely has some big things a-brewing.
