Fly My Pretties

Fly My Pretties

About Fly My Pretties from Wellington

Fly My Pretties is New Zealand's favourite live multimedia event starring a selection of our finest contemporary musicians, set to a stunning visual backdrop and filmed and recorded live! Since its inception, Fly My Pretties has grown to become a local legend of music that continues to reach people all over the world. Through their last series of live performances and two award winning albums, the music from this event has captivated listeners of all ages.

Fly My Pretties first entered our hearts and minds in 2004, with the idea from The Black Seeds front-man Barnaby Weir and co-conspirator Mikee Tucker, to assemble a talented and exciting group of Wellington-based musicians for a one-off project. The objective: To meet, exchange ideas, and then perform and record the results in front of a live audience.

Fly My Pretties performed their first season at Wellingtons BATS Theatre over five nights. It was a hit, and Fly My Pretties became Bats most attended event of 2004. Likewise, the album “Fly My Pretties - Live at Bats” became one of LOOPs most successful releases to date achieving gold-status, receiving 6 B-Net nominations (winning Best Pop Album), and being released internationally in the UK.

Building on the first event, The Return of Fly My Pretties saw key members of the original cast reunite, and meet with new faces from the Wellington music scene. With the repertoire encompassing a diverse range of styles from folk-roots, to reggae, rock, new-soul, and blues; the themes repeatedly reflect the state of contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand: A nation isolated in the pacific that is searching for its identity, while remembering where we have come from. Once again Fly My Pretties shows were a sell out nationwide and the second album “Fly My Pretties – The Return Of” also went on to achieve gold status and worldwide popularity.

Into 2009 and Fly My Pretties returns for the third time, featuring musicians from all over Aotearoa including some of the original Wellington crew. Bringing a new twist to the show, Barnaby’s legendary storytelling father Dick Weir is on board as a narrator. Together they have written an adventure story which will be used as a thread throughout the new shows, and also published and released along with the third live CD/DVD.

Fly My Pretties in 2009 features Barnaby Weir, Jarney Murphy, Mike Fabulous, Nathan ‘Nato’ Hickey, Tessa Rain, and fresh faces Anna Coddington, Eva Prowse, L.A. Mitchell, Lisa Tomlins, Mara T.K, Nigel Patterson, Paul McLaney (Gramsci), Ryan Prebble, Tom Watson (Cassette) and Riki Gooch and Rio Hunuki-Hemopo (TrinityRoots). Fly My Pretties is truly a melting pot of NZ’s creative musical diversity.
