Cut Loose

Cut Loose

About Cut Loose from Wellington

Cut Loose spins a genre-defying fusion of uplifting, funky and soulful music from the past, the future, and all around the world.

“A Very competent and versatile DJ. Original and unpredictable selections. Utilizing the skills of a Hip Hop DJ but turning them to much more than that genre alone. Not genre specific. A fantastic balance between both songs I’ve never heard before (and now want to hear more) and older songs… Never a predictable selection. Emits great vibes too!”

- DJ ALPHABETHEAD, NZ DMC CHAMPION (2002)

Raised in Wellington, London, Yorkshire and a few places in between, Cut Loose started listening to music via headphones placed on her mother’s stomach. From there her musical obsession grew like a demented beanstalk, from drumming in surf band Sitting Pretty, to 3 years at the helm of gig guide The package; from showcasing conscious collaborations with Creative Combat, to rocking the crowd at the MPC Championships of the World.

Genre-mashing DJs such as Mr Scruff, Giles Peterson, and The Nextmen provided inspiration, early mentors Eugene, and B-line taught the rudiments, and local luminaries Raw and Alphabethead rounded things out with beat juggling and advanced mixing tuition.

Cut Loose came out on top of DJ Raw‘s 2009 DJ Certificate Program, with a whole bag of tricks and the Dr Paul Hutchison trophy for Best Performance. Ian Jorgenson, founder of legendary music fest Camp a Low Hum personally invited her to perform at this year’s festival. She has also played up and down NZ and is currently preparing for a 2011 tour of the UK, Europe and West Asia.
