Oddball & Chain
About Oddball & Chain from Wellington
Oddball & Chain started in the winter of 2009. The brainchild of Wellington songwriter Stefan Reyners, O&C is principally folk-based and reaches out to the lost relics of 60s and 70s song. At times pastoral and subsequently Nick Drake-esque in nature, Reyners’ songs display a highly developed sense of melody and breathe pure distance with every strum. Perhaps best traced through a combination of Love’s psych-folk classic Forever Changes, Big Star’s unsung masterpiece #1 Record and Galaxie 500’s strange mood-mélange On Fire, Oddball & Chain places the outlandish at the wheel whilst relying on a steady pop conscience for acceleration (albeit at a measured pace). In explaining the project’s title, Reyners says that Oddball & Chain alludes to the creative rapport between himself and his guitar with all strange nuances intact.
“Strange and distant 60s-inflected folk rock/pop with a sharp penchant for Mancunian melancholy and melody, Oddball & Chain is feel through wistful arpeggiation and charm through a blue-eyed soul maître d' in Reyners and his voice.”
Forthcoming EP scheduled for release in late 2010.
