Jackal

Jackal

About Jackal from Auckland

Jackal formed in late 2006 as a result of drummer Will McGrath asking

bassist Alec Cummins if he would like to form a band. Will’s younger

brother Theo soon joined as singer and lead guitarist. They began

writing and playing almost immediately, setting out to have a raw

punk/grunge sound inspired by bands such as Black Sabbath, Red Hot

Chili Peppers and Dinosaur Jr. They began gigging at bars around

Auckland and in 2008 recorded their debut album, a 9 track offering

entitled ‘Sleeping Life’. This was self funded and released, and the band continued to gig around

Auckland to support it. In early 2009, they decided that they should

change to a four piece, with Will switching to lead guitar and a new

drummer being added to the lineup. Since then, they have played with

several drummers, putting on powerful live shows, mixing varied

dynamics with complex song structures. While between drummers, the

McGrath brothers and Cummins spent most of 2010 writing new material,

and in that time added acoustic gigs to their repertoire. In late 2010

they began recording a new album entitled ‘Furnace Creek’. This album,

recorded with a four piece lineup, marks a dramatic growth in the music

of the band, combining punk, progressive, metal and funk with strong

lead and acoustic guitar elements. The album was released in early

2011. Hayden Keach joined the lineup as drummer in late 2010, and

Jackal is now playing many dates in support of ‘Furnace

Creek’.
