Hannah Curwood

Hannah Curwood

About Hannah Curwood from Auckland

Hannah Curwood is an intense, friendly bundle of precocious energy and musical force. An early childhood spent in the sparse redness of Western Australia was followed by adolescence amongst the cool, clear rivers, lakes and mountains of Central Otago in the South Island of New Zealand.

Hannah has two passions in life, music and animals. Her lyrics often evoke imagery and experiences from her youth, rusty water-tanks wavering in the heat of a merciless sun, dancers shuffling though piles of autumn leaves and Hannah herself riding through snowy mountains on a white horse.

Hannah has her own, authentic musical voice. She writes folk-pop with a dark edge, weaving a delicate balance between dulcet pop melodies and something darker and more ambient. An obsession with Burt Bacharach and 60’s style backing vocals is melded with the black poetry of Nick Cave and the eclectic beauty of Kate Bush to produce something entirely unique. Live, her ethereal voice is accompanied by fierce electric guitar, strings, percussion and a plethora of backing vocals.

An independent gal, Hannah created her own record label, Luggate Records, named after the tiny town of Luggate in which she spent most of her youth. She released Sky Above, Horse Below in 2007, The Blind Love E.P in 2009 and is currently songwriting for her third release, a full length album.

Hannah has recently completed a tour of Europe and the UK, wowing audiences at shows that ranged from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to the dark clubs of Kreutzberg, Berlin.

Hannah's unique and beautiful voice has featured records for Dimmer, The Checks and Paul Mclaney, to name a few.
