Johanna & The Mystery
About Johanna & The Mystery from Wellington
Multi-instrumentalist JoHanna began performing acoustically, alongside other Wellington artists, including: Jess Chambers (The Woolshed Sessions); virtuoso guitarist Justin Firefly Clarke (Fly My Pretties IV, The Woolshed Sessions) and Nigel Collins (Wellington International Ukelele Orchestra) .
Since forming the band, 'JoHanna & The Mystery', in February 2011, JoHanna's music has transformed into a more alternative soulful sound. As a band, multi-instrumentalists Ben Lemi (Hikoikoi) and Sage Kamaru (former A Hori Buzz bassist), together with jazz bassist Will Sklenars, add alternative rock and hip-hop elements to JoHanna's catchy hooks. 'The Mystery' band members all swap around between instruments, bringing a wide range of musical colours to JoHanna's smokey soul feel.
Described as being reminiscent of the organ-infused sounds of The Doors, mixed with the soulfulness of Amy Winehouse, and the edginess of P.J Harvey, JoHanna & The Mystery are fast developing a reputation for their dynamic performances.
JoHanna was based in London for 2011. She gigged extensively in London and also played in Europe. In early 2012, JoHanna & The Mystery toured the South Island of New Zealand. They are currently planning a North Island tour as well as recording their debut E.P at The Surgery recording studios in Wellington.
JoHanna will head over to Europe for a few months in mid-2012. The debut E.P from JoHanna & The Mystery is planned for release in October 2012.
