Skank Attack
About Skank Attack from Wellington
Skank Attack were an integral part of the Wellington alternative music scene in the mid to late 1980’s. They became known for the energy and intensity of their live shows, which often had a strong visual aspect.
Former members of the band have recently unearthed the multitrack tapes from their last recording
session and have been working with respected New Zealand music producer Nick Roughan to mix the best songs for release in 2012.The first single ‘Down Around Our Ears’ was released on 1.2.12.
It was featured on it’s release date on Silke Hartung’s respected
‘Freak the sheep’ NZ music show on Auckland’s BFM. Silke interviewed
former Skank guitarist/vocalist Phil Simpson about the bands plans to
release further material later this year.

As a three piece the Skank Attack approach was a stripped back exercise in rhythm and dynamics. While their DIY attitude owed much to the post punk era, their sound was probably most heavily influenced by later UK acts like New Order and Echo and the Bunnymen.
In the course of several national tours Skank Attack developed strong links with other bands around the country and received favourable airplay on alternative radio stations like BFM. Through sheer commitment and drive they developed from a little known garage band to a tight and experienced unit very quickly and were booked to play support for Hunters and Collectors at Wellington’s Union Hall, before disbanding as definitively as they had begun (in 1988). They released a self titled E.P under their own ‘Skank Records’ moniker and a compilation of tracks by Wellington bands entitled ‘Where The Wind Blows’, both of which received enthusiastic reviews.
Before going their separate ways, the group recorded an album at ‘Writhe Studios’ with Producer Nick Roughan (whose long and impressive CV includes playing and producing with Skeptics, Dimmer and The Adults) with engineering help from Brent McLachlan of Bailter Space. This material (which has now been fully restored, mixed and mastered) comprises the current and forthcoming releases listed above for 2012.
