About The Golden Awesome from Wellington
The Golden Awesome are a Wellington band, formed in 2009. Inspired by legendary 80s/90s bands like My Bloody Valentine and the Cocteau Twins, along with New Zealand bands of the same era such as Bailter Space and Snapper, The Golden Awesome evoke the lush, loud, wall-of-sound music of Shoegaze. Equal parts sweet and abrasive, the Golden Awesome sound exactly as their name suggests.
The members of the band – Stef Animal (voice, keyboards), Jo Contag (guitar, recording), Matt Steindl (bass) and Justin Barr (drums) – have been involved with a number of cult indie groups over the years, including: Mink, Cloudboy, Mestar, The Raskolnikovs, The Users, Bad Statistics, and Jay Clarkson.
“The Golden Awesome’s jaw-dropping set in the barn on the final night of Camp [a Low Hum] was serenely gorgeous. A huge sound composed of various melted parts, the band bonded together in such a way that the songs just grew until they burst. An unassuming but powerful presence with gorgeous, glittering songs, it was like no other shoegaze music ever existed. Everything stopped and ended there. They had me floored”

“ Trading in straight-up shoegaze (My Bloody Valentine, Ride, etc), they combine the surging, layered guitars and soaring, ethereal vocals of that era with a driving rhythmic undercarriage – at this year’s Camp A Low Hum, they and Melbourne fellow travellers Lowtide cut through the chillwave mush with the urgency of their sound”

“The Golden Awesome create a balance somewhere between psychedelia, shoegaze, and dream-pop: thick and throbbing, evoking strobe lights diffused through dense smoky rooms”
Jester Jay, September 28, 2011
“Like a wild and endlessly colliding set of terrestrial plates, THE GOLDEN AWESOME emerge from the earth's core, erupting lava and fire everywhere. This is their debut and premiere album, fully formed and intensely harmonious. They hail from Wellington, New Zealand, and traffic in some of the most electrifying sounds heard on these shores in many years. Music to get lost in for days on end“
