EnCanMA

About EnCanMA from Auckland

Formed in Auckland in 1982 EnCanMA began with the line-up; Ljinon, guitar/ vocals, Vince Pinker (who later joined The Gordons for awhile) bass and Bevan Sweeney (later Children's Hour and Headless Chickens) drums. The band supported the likes of an early 'Dance Exponents', a just returned from Oz and Toy Love experiences, Chris Knox and an at the time reformed The Clean, amongst a host of others in various venues around NZ, with a few notable guest appearances by various leading NZ muso's from time to time.

At one stage having Grant Hughson  on trumpet.

While on a South Island tour though had a reshuffle, with firstly Chris Orange (Features) then Liz Cotter joining and taking over the drums roles.

With Ljinon forming ECF in 1983, the band ceased to exist for awhile but reformed in 1985, with the line-up Ljinon (see Ljinon), guitars/ vocals, Shayne O'Neill (also from ECF but before that Desperate Measures), guitars/ vocals and Eric Android (of Andriods fame and glories), drums/ vocals (Which was of course the original 3Guesses).

Two main releases amongst various indies, the first by Blue Factory Distribution in 1983, titled 'Tribal War', which was the title track and became something of a favourite on NZ Student Radio in that year; the other on the Pagan Records 1987 Student Compilation LP 'Spins & Needles', the song 'Tribal War' but re-recorded by the 85-87 EnCanMA soon to be 3Guesses. While supporting Australian band 'Died Pretty' on their national tour though NZ in 1987 changed the name from EnCanMA to 3Guesses, which had been in the waiting the band wanting a fresh start.

Described by media as more of a movement than a band and had a great reputation for invention, with Ljinon's melodic guitar style and Bevan's flowing rhythm's blowing people away in the early 1980's in NZ history. Later with which was to become 3Guesses the format was more the dance band while writing, recording and touring. The band though had a string of very successful songs on student radio which as mentioned earlier kind of got to cult status with the song 'Tribal War', and others. Now Ljinon concentrates on new band inventions on the touring circuit, 4Tunz, Wind Up Toys and Joe Blogz, with 3Guesses and En CanMA on the side, which play on reformation performances, 3Guesses being the main band.
