Tono

About Tono from Dunedin

Tono is a songwriter for a new generation. Born in 1986, the year after Roger Douglas floated the dollar and sailed New Zealand into the free market, Tono grew up at a time when New Zealanders were trading in their tattered old social consciences for the sexy promises of neo-liberal economics.

Too impatient to make it as an historian, and seeing there was no market for protest songs, Tono decided to embrace the world around him, and write pop songs about relationships in a free market world.

His debut EP, ‘Love and Economics,’ is a witty, playful take on a deadly serious subject – the effect of the invisible hand on the heart. With insightful, character-based lyrics, twisting key changes and tightly crafted song structures, all wrapped up in efficient, beatle-esque pop arrangements, this five-song experience will have you running to Wikipedia to look up ‘opportunity cost.’

Tono and his Finance Company (Matt Bodman, Chris Miller, Andy Straight) recorded the EP in Dunedin with Stu Harwood of The Tweeks. It was mastered by local wizard, Dale Cotton, and now Jody Lloyd’s She’ll Be Right Records is proudly releasing it.
