Anything But Federal
About Anything But Federal from Auckland
We are a 4 piece band hailing from Auckland, Anything But Federal (ABF for short) have come a long way from their humble beginnings as a few mates getting together to just jam out some rock riffs. 2007 saw the boys get serious and enter the studio for the first time to record their debut self titled EP, and with the first single Amongst Others receiving rave reviews and air play on The Rocks’ off the record.
This year we've been busy; following up the January release of Amongst Others, we've released our second single from the EP, called Butterfly Effect. It's also received airplay on The Rock's off the record show and the video for the single has also aired on C4 and Alt TV. It goes without saying that ABF are a force to be reckoned with.
Their sound is perhaps best described as alt rock. Fusing together their different musical genre influences of Metallica, Every Time I Die, Nirvana, Foo Fighters and even a touch of Stevie Wonder, the resulting sound is all their own. Driving, and sometimes insane shredding and guitar riffs from Jonny and Ben, solid drum beats with technical fills from Paul, and funked out bass from Kevin hold the songs together. The lyrics, written collaboratively, as is the music itself, often deal with personal topics such as relationships, our place in the world and day-to-day life itself. Ben Ruegg’s emotive voice then comes in on top, creating an alt punk sound that hooks you in and gets you rocking out, and if not singing, then definitely humming along.
“It was obvious on first listen that [they have] something special… I look forward to hearing anything new from Anything But Federal... they will stamp their mark in NZ music” – Rob Taylor, DJ on The Rock, 2007.
And that is exactly what this 4 piece from Auckland are aiming to do – leave a lasting impression on all those who hear their guitar driven, energetic, alternative rock. With plenty of 2008 left there's more gigs in the pipeline and a possible trip back to the studio to make a start on the first recordings with our new line-up.
