Interview with Hope from Dunedin band Bad Sav - be sure to head to our downloads section to get yourself a copy of "Bad Sam".

Been around since?

About October last year.

Current line up?

Lucinda plays bass , Mike plays drums , Hope plays guitar and sings.

Where are you based?

Dunedin

What got you into music?

It's fairly unavoidable stuff. My dad plays drums and the parents made me play the violin when i was a kid...as for the other two, i think Luci started playing guitar and bass in high school and Mike's been in a few bands playing guitar. He's working on an album right now for his other band, The Alpha State.

How did you get together?

Mike and I just started hanging out and playing music a bit at the end of last year but then Lucinda came back from Wellington and we started playing gigs around town.

How would you describe your sound?

A missed punch and a grazed fist. Sad heavy, unpredictable loud pop.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Can, Mclusky, the Fall, Batrider, Neko Case, that new HEALTH album, Love of Diagrams.

What is your writing/recording process?

Sometimes I'll write a riff, sometimes Luci will, most of the time we'll combine them, or we'll just come up with something when we're messing around. There's not a large amount of structure to our process.

Your Dream Collaboration?

Andy Falko, Janet Weiss and Cat Power (pre-sobriety).

Do you have any releases out or on the way?

We're probably going to do some recording in the next week or two before Mike moves to Auckland. He's one of those Sound Guys, so we'll record it 'ourselves' out at the masonic lodge and hopefully have some sort of EP out over summer.

What do you enjoy most about music?

The fact that you can love some of it so much and hate some of it so much.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learnt musically in the last year?

How to fall on the floor without breaking my guitar.

What’s the best concert you have ever been to?

Fur Patrol at the Invercargill Velodrome with Scribe.

Best or most memorable gig you have played?

We played at the Cook earlier in the year, drums got kicked over and a mike stand got thrown.

If you could share the stage with anyone (band or person) who would it be?

Albini. Or Shellac or Big Black or something.

Most overrated band at the moment?

Canadia.

Most underrated band at the moment?

God Bows To Math.

The future holds…?

More crusty octave pedal.

The state of music in NZ is….

Good for the people who look further than their televisions to be told what to listen to.
