MUZAI is an independent record label based in Auckland, New Zealand. Run by two guys (Benjii, Martin) with a penchant for obscure Nintendocore bands and a mutual love of Nirvana.
It started out as an idea in January 2009 after a show in Auckland, where enamored with the work both guys did, decided to start a small little label based on the old postal service punk/hardcore labels back in the United Kingdom. Releasing three records in March 2009 and thus having a discography, they officially call that MUZAI’s “date of birth.”
In their first year, MUZAI has had the fortune to deal with both the newer generation of bands coming out of the Auckland scene (being fiercely into the All Ages scene) alongside some of the more established acts from the city. In October, the label branched out to Dunedin, testing how a long distance relationship would work. The label has also been subjected to a flurry of volunteers who, for some reason, like them – turning a two man operation into a communal practice with bands and fans alike.
And yes, Benjii and Martin still do love Nirvana.
